Why is the lion’s foot mugwort aged for 3 years?
Proverb: Seeking mugwort aged for 3 years after 7 years of sickness
Meaning: To look for high-quality mugwort aged for 3 years after suffering from 7 years of sickness
Source: Mencius
It means to realize a sickness is worse than expected and to rush to look for a panacea to heal it.
The proverb teaches us that we won’t make it in time if we rush only during emergencies - what is important is to always be ready, whatever may arise.
Sun-drying (aging) the mugwort enhances its yang qualities. Afterall, the sun is the most yang element there is in nature. The process removes moisture from the mugwort, bestowing it with soft warmth.
From olden times, raw mugwort has been known to retain a lot of moisture. Setting it on fire was believed to turn all the moisture into steam and cause burns. Such is why sun-dried or aged mugwort is more favorable.
It is based on the yin-yang theory that the yin quality of rawness (wetness ≒ cold) changes (transforms) into the yang quality of dryness (dry ≒ fire) over time.
Three years of aging removes and mellows the acridity, bitterness, and astringency of the plant, while any pesticide residues disappear.
Time boosts the essential oil components of the mugwort. Like with wine, aging subtly changes the scent of the mugwort into an ever-so-pleasant aroma.
The importance of how the mugwort is aged
Imagine the sea breeze full of minerals, rays of sunshine gently beaming down, and the cool comfort of fresh air. This is the kind of paradise where our lion’s foot mugwort is slowly aged.
1 They are picked twice a year - once on Dano in June and once again in August.
2 We carefully sort through the harvest, handpicking only mugwort of the highest grade.
3 The mugwort is washed.
4 Bundled and hung up like dried flowers, the mugwort is aged for 3 years in a special well-ventilated greenhouse.
5 The aged mugwort is cleaned, finely ground, refined, and closely inspected for quality control.

Lion’s foot mugwort can be used for both wet and dry mugwort steam
・Wet mugwort steam
The herbal blend is simmered in hot water over low flame in a pot. The resulting steam gently warms the lower body.
The plant extract transforms into steam, which is then absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes.
A steam gown is worn to trap the steam for a highly relaxing sauna-like effect to encourage sweating.
This method of mugwort steam is popular in Japan.
Please use 10~20 grams of lion’s foot mugwort for each session of wet mugwort steam.
・Dry mugwort steam
The mugwort is lit on fire like moxa to smoke the lower body.
Your body warms up quickly after the session.
High bacterial-killing properties can be expected from the smoke.
Easy to do, this method has been practiced from ancient times.
Due to the smoke and strong aromas, we recommend doing this outside.
Please use 5 grams of lion’s foot mugwort for each session of dry mugwort steam.
